Organic Cotton
Organic Cotton is when the cotton is grown without the use of toxic chemicals. Also the cotton is not open to substances after the growing process. So you could say that organic cotton farming is an environmentally friendly process. Other cotton growers like conventional cotton growers use a lot of chemicals which is not good for the soil, air and water. This is why it is best to use the toxic chemicals as little as possible. The future for organic cotton production in Australia- It is way too expensive for Australia to have their own facilities to produce the thin woven cotton for bed sheets, so they are sent overseas. Compared to other cotton producers in the world the cost of Australia’s organic cotton is way more expensive. The positives of organic cotton farming for the farmer is firstly, he will use no chemicals or pesticides which will save money for the farmer. Another positive for having organic cotton farming for the farmer is that it is better for the health of the farmer, his workers and the community. Did you know that over 77 million workers at cotton farms that use pesticides and chemicals suffer because of this. Some negatives for the farmer if they are growing organic cotton is firstly that the lack of pesticides may make it harder to control weeds in the cotton crops. If too many weeds get into the cotton crop it may reduce the amount of the cotton and also lessen the purity of the cotton grown. Cotton Farmers that aren't organic fix this problem with all of the weeds by using GM seed which stands for genetically modified seed. Genetically modified seed is when the cotton seed is modified so that farmers can spray a chemical called round up which kills all living things. Though when the farmer sprays round up on genetically modified cotton it doesn't die. Though the weeds do. Though organic farmers can't do this because it isn't organic. So although the farmer may save money by not buying pesticides and chemicals, it will cost him more the control the weeds and he might not harvest as much cotton. Negatives of Organic Cotton farming for the consumer is that it may become more expensive and harder to find. Some positives of Organic Cotton for the consumer is it is a greener and cleaner product. The consumer pays a big part in the cotton industry because they can decide if they want a greener product which will reduce the amount of chemicals used in farming. This will increase the health of farm workers, the environment, the air quality and the river systems to a higher level. In the end I think that organic cotton farming is better than not organic cotton farming because over all it will help make our earth last longer! |
